Three Excerpts from Kleinzeit
In memoriam Russel Hoban.
Brilliant.
“The girl carrying the bull” …
I’m reading this excellent book right now called “The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony”. Great retelling/re-weaving of lots of greek myths, starting with Europa and the bull. Not a book for the prudish.
The Song of Seikilos. Oldest complete piece of notated music we have, found written on an Ancient Greek tombstone. Written by Seikilos in memory of his dead wife.
This may be one of my favorite videos on YouTube. I’d love to learn more about this: the notation, the theory behind this music, what little we know about the performance practice.
Nymphs listening to the songs of Orpheus - Charles François Jalabert
I like that this painting focuses on the listeners - I can’t actually see Orpheus in here anywhere. But the emotional response of the audience is what’s important, I guess.
Jean Raoux, Orpheus and Eurydice, c. 1709
Eurydice looking back? Says something about the underworld.
F. Holland Day, Nude Youth with Laurel Wreath and Lyre (Orpheus), 1907
ohohoh. how beautiful.
Also, this looks like it’s reflected in water? Thoughts? Makes me think of Narcissus, intersection of sorrow/grief/self-pity.
