Debussy Syrinx
HED

A humble offering today, from a performance I gave in mid-September, 2008. Also pretty accurately reflective of my current mood.

I’ve only performed this twice; the other time was at my senior recital, May earlier of that same year. The two performances were very different - the piece made me want to do it differently each time I performed it.

Today, I played flute for a couple of hours for the first time in ages. Did slow warm-ups, played through some of my old favorite pieces. Played through Syrinx. Missing how I used to sound.

“In classical mythology, Syrinx (Greek Συριγξ) was a nymph and a follower of Artemis, known for her chastity. Pursued by the amorous Greek god Pan, she ran to the river’s edge and asked for assistance from the river nymphs. In answer, she was transformed into hollow water reeds that made a haunting sound when the god’s frustrated breath blew across them. Pan cut the reeds to fashion the first set of pan pipes, which were thence forth known as syrinx. […]

This piece is based on Pan’s sadness over losing his love.” (Wikipedia)

Enjoy.
